How Liquid Screed Lowers UFH Heating Bills
While air is a brilliant insulator for your double glazing, it’s the enemy of underfloor heating. Traditional dry-tamp screeds are often prone to tiny air pockets around the water pipes, created during the manual installation process, which form a “thermal barrier” that slows down heat.
By contrast, liquid screed uses its natural fluidity to flow into every corner of the floor. This ensures the UFH pipes are totally ‘hugged’ or encapsulated, eradicating air gaps and allowing energy to transfer directly into the floor rather than being trapped beneath it. Total contact is only half the story, though, the physical depth of the floor also determines your running costs.
Because liquid screed is significantly stronger than traditional mixes, we can pour it much thinner – often just 30mm over the pipes. This reduces the ‘thermal mass’ which means your floor reacts almost instantly. You’re not wasting hours (and money) heating up a thick, heavy slab.

The way you treat your floor in the first two weeks after the pour determines how it will perform for the next twenty years. For anyone managing their own projects, these four questions are the non-negotiables of a successful installation.
For optimum efficiency and drying speed, we aim for a minimum cover of 30mm over the pipes. This keeps the floor strong while ensuring the drying time is kept to a minimum—usually around 30 to 40 days for a standard domestic pour. If you have a tight deadline, you could use ultra-thin screed which can be applied at 12mm.
Running the heating (commissioning) forces any residual moisture to the surface. It also allows the screed to undergo its initial thermal expansion. It’s better to let the floor move before the tiles are stuck down than after!
Liquid screed has very low shrinkage, so long as you follow the 7-day commissioning rule and ensure your movement joints are placed correctly (which we handle during the pour).
Yes. After the first 48 hours, a dehumidifier is a good way to control the environment, especially in tight sites where natural ventilation might be a problem. It’s can save weeks on your project timeline.
