Rapid formulations cure quickly from the top down but surface-dry doesn’t mean tile-ready. Before setting out your first row of tiles, check for residual moisture using one of these methods:

  • Carbide Method (CM) Testing – This is the definitive test for screeded floors. You take a core sample from the bottom third of the slab, crush it, and mix it with calcium carbide in a sealed pressure flask. For rapid cementitious screeds, you are looking for a reading below 2.0% CM (or 0.5% CM for calcium sulfate/anhydrite screeds).
  • Surface Relative Humidity (RH) Box – Comprising an insulated hygrometer box sealed to the slab surface for 24 to 72 hours in line with BS 8203 / BS 5385. Standard flexible tile adhesives require an RH reading of 75% or lower.
  • Thermal & Moisture Mapping – Run a non-destructive impedance meter over the pour to pinpoint areas near external doors, corners, or thicker screed sections that may be curing slower.

Uncoupling Membranes – How to Tile Sooner and Stop Cracks

An uncoupling membrane solves two common site problems at the same time: it lets you tile faster, and it stops heated floors from cracking tiles. Studded uncoupling mats have underside air channels that allow leftover moisture to escape safely, while isolating the tile layer so the screed can expand and contract underneath without pulling on the adhesive. Here is how it protects the floor:

  • Neutralises Lateral Movement – Rapid screeds and porcelain tiles expand and contract at different rates when heated. An uncoupling mat allows the screed to move underneath without transferring stress to the tiles; this stops tenting and cracked grout lines.
  • Equalises Vapour Pressure – Studded uncoupling mats create open air channels beneath the matting. This lets any moisture still in the screed dissipate rather than accumulating directly behind large-format porcelain tiles.
  • Enables Faster Tile Installation – Because the mat bridges micro-cracks and manages vapour, many manufacturers allow you to install the membrane as soon as the screed reaches foot-traffic hardness (often 24 to 48 hours for rapid cementitious screeds), provided the screed is structurally sound.
  • Adhesive Specification – Always bed the matting into a fresh layer of C2-classified, flexible tile adhesive using the notched trowel size specified by the membrane manufacturer, pressing it down firmly with a float or roller to make sure you have 100% coverage.

Screed needs to expand and contract through its full thermal range before the tiling goes down. Commissioning forces the screed to go through its initial thermal expansion, releases remaining moisture, and exposes any screed movement before you fix tiles in place.

  • When to Start – Rapid cementitious screeds allow commissioning to start within 3 to 5 days of the pour. For rapid calcium sulfate (anhydrite) screeds, wait at least 7 days to ensure the core has reached sufficient structural strength.
  • Gradual Heat is Key – Step up the water temperature up in 5°C increments allowing the screed to expand evenly, avoiding perimeter lifting and curling.
  • Moisture Clearance – commissioning forces trapped moisture to the surface. Once the slab cools, test with a carbide meter (CM) or surface hygrometer. If tiling directly onto the screed, do not spread adhesive until the floor drops below 2.0% CM (or 75% RH).

  • Post-Tiling Wait Period: Once tiles are down and grouted, leave the UFH off for a minimum of 14 to 28 days (depending on your adhesive spec) before bringing the heating back on slowly.

Choosing the Right Tile Adhesive and Primer for Fast-Track Screeds

Once your screed is prepped and the UFH cycle is complete, you need to be sure you get the right bonding product and apply it correctly to be sure your tiles stay down permanently:

  • Manage Suction with SBR/Acrylic Primer – Apply a diluted acrylic primer with a brush or roller to seal the screed’s surface pores. This gives your tile adhesive its full working open-time, preventing it from “skinning over” before the tile is bedded down.
  • Rapid-Set vs Standard-Set Adhesives:
    • Rapid-Set (C2F S1) – Cures in 2 to 3 hours. Ideal for small-to-medium areas or fast-track commercial handovers where you must grout on the same day.
    • Standard-Set (C2 S1) – Cures in 4 to 5 hours. Essential for large-format porcelain (600x600mm and above) where the process takes longer.
  • 100% Solid Bed Coverage – Always use a 10mm to 12mm notched trowel and back-butter the underside of large tiles. Never use “dot and dab” fixing over screeds – gaps under the tile trap air, creating cold spots over underfloor heating and hollow points that crack under heavy point loads.
