1. Start with a Spotless Subfloor:
Your existing concrete needs to be really clean and free of contaminants. Sweep, vacuum, and degrease if necessary. Compound manufacturers will often recommend a suitable primer to ensure excellent adhesion and prevent the compound from drying out too fast, which can weaken it. Don’t skip this – check the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Measure the Dips and Rises:
Before mixing, get a clear picture of that landscape you’re dealing with. Use a long straightedge or laser level to find the lowest and highest areas. This tells you how much the floor slopes or where the main depressions are, guiding your application and helping you estimate what material you need.
3. The Right Mix Ratio is Crucial:
Read and follow the manufacturer’s mixing instructions. Accurate water measurement is critical to the compound’s performance and strength. Use a mechanical mixer for a consistent, lump-free blend. Prepare only enough material that you can confidently apply before it begins to harden.

Once mixed, you’re on the clock as levelling compounds set in around 20 minutes. Pour it onto the prepared floor, typically starting from the point furthest from your exit if it’s a large space or targeting low spots. Spread it gently with a trowel or float or use a spiked roller for self-levelling compounds to encourage flow and pop air bubbles. Keep a wet edge to avoid visible join lines.”

2. Calculating the Required ‘Lift’:
To level a slope successfully, you need to understand its extent. Use a laser level, or a long spirit level with packers, to work out the highest point (your benchmark) and the lowest point. Calculate the difference in height so you know the maximum depth of compound required.
3. Blending the Compound Correctly:
We recommend self- levelling compound for sloping floors, and its success is dependent on the correct mixing. Follow the water quantity instructions religiously – too much or too little compromises the result. Use a drill with a proper mixing paddle to get a completely smooth, workable slurry. Don’t mix more than can be applied before it starts to thicken.
4. Controlled Pouring and Distribution on a Slope:
For a sloping floor, begin pouring the compound at the lowest part of the room, allowing it to find its level and then gently guiding it. You may need to apply it in layers if the slope is severe or use formwork (edge battens) to contain the compound at doorways or open edges until it sets. A spiked roller can help release air and improve flow, especially for thicker applications.
5. Curing and Hardening Phase:
Keep to the manufacturer-specified drying and curing timeline. Factors like the maximum thickness applied (which will be at the slope’s lowest point) and the room’s environment (temperature, airflow) will need to be taken into account.
