What flooring can you lay on liquid screed? The good news is that virtually any decorative floor covering can be laid directly on liquid screed, including large-format porcelain, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), solid or engineered timber, laminate, and resin systems.

Liquid screed gives you a smooth, level base (SR1 tolerance) that makes setting out easy. The trick to completing the job successfully is treating the substrate correctly right from the start. Anhydrite screeds need a barrier primer so cement-based tile adhesives don’t react with the gypsum inside the slab. If you pair that with proper underfloor heating commissioning and a quick moisture check, you’ll have a solid foundation for your flooring that won’t fail down the line.

The Fitter’s Spec – Rules for Every Floor Type

Laying floor coverings over liquid screed isn’t complicated, but it does require that you follow hard site numbers. Here is how to spec the job depending on what flooring you’re installing over the slab.

1. Ceramic, Porcelain & Stone

This needs an S1 flexible tile adhesive. If the subfloor is anhydrite liquid scree d, seal the slab with a specialised acrylic primer to prevent ettringite. If it’s a cementitious liquid screed, prime and tile as normal.

2. Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) & Sheet Goods

This is where liquid screed’s SR1 surface regularity (under 3mm variance over 2m) comes into its own. Sand surface laitance, prime the substrate, and apply a 2mm water-based skim coat to make absolutely sure no aggregate shadow shows through the vinyl.

3. Engineered & Solid Wood

Stringent moisture verification required. Standard subfloors must read below 75% RH or <0.5% CM. If you’re gluing timber over an underfloor heating grid, moisture must drop below <0.2% CM. Don’t forget UFH thermal commissioning before taking readings.

4. Carpet & Laminate

Never drive gripper nails into thin-bed liquid screeds containing UFH loops. Stick grippers with powerful adhesive, and use high-density, low-TOG underlays to maintain heat transfer into the room.

Stripping Surface Laitance

Laitance is a weak, non-structural skin of fine aggregate and binder that bleeds to the top of the pour. Applying tile adhesive or smoothing compounds over unsanded laitance means you are bonding your expensive floor covering to a chalky film that will shear off under foot traffic.

  1. Timing – Run a floor sander across the slab 7 to 10 days after pouring.
  2. Execution – Use a 60-grit sanding pad to break through the cream finish until the solid aggregate underneath is exposed.
  3. Dust Removal – Clean the entire slab with an industrial vacuum.

UFH Commissioning & Moisture Testing

Trapping dampness beneath vinyl or wood will inevitably cause adhesive breakdown, warping, and unpleasant smells. Before taking moisture readings, you should run a full thermal commissioning cycle on the underfloor heating manifold to get rid of any residual moisture from around the pipework.

Once commissioned, test the slab. A surface digital hygrometer box left sealed on the floor for 24 hours must register below 75% RH. Alternatively, run a Carbide Method (CM) test:

  • Tiles, LVT & Carpet – Must read <0.5% CM
  • Timber over Active UFH – Must read <0.2% CM

At a standard depth of 40mm, liquid screed takes roughly 40 days to dry naturally (1 day per mm). Once dry, the surface laitance must be sanded, vacuumed, and primed before pouring a smoothing skim to eliminate minor aggregate grain.

Tiling over an unprimed anhydrite liquid screed with cement-based tile adhesive triggers a chemical reaction that forms a brittle mineral called ettringite, causing tiles to debond and pop off the floor.

An acrylic or polyurethane barrier primer seals the gypsum-based slab. This prevents moisture and cement in the tile adhesive from reacting with the gypsum substrate underneath.

Yes, underfloor heating must undergo a full thermal commissioning cycle before installing engineered or solid timber over liquid screed.

Running warm water through the manifold (starting at 20°C and increasing by 5°C per day) forces out deep structural moisture trapped around the heating loops. Missing out this step causes trapped dampness to warp the timber once the heating turns on during winter.

Sand the laitance 7 to 10 days post-pour, vacuum up fine dust, commission your underfloor heating, and double-check subfloor dryness before applying adhesive.
